2008/10/21 Jason Wu's A17 Speech

A 17 Title: Let’s join study gathering speaker: Jason Wu
Project: The Technical Speech date: 10/21/2008
Time: 8 to 10 minutes

Objectives:
Convert a technical paper or technical material and information into a technical speech.
Organize a technical speech according to the inverted-pyramid approach.
Write a technical speech as “spoken language,” not as an article.
Give the speech by effectively reading out loud.

In Toastmasters club we can learn English communication skill and leadership, so we came here for those skills, but our meetings just hold twice a month it is not enough let us to improve those skills we need more chance to practice, study gathering provide such opportunity, so let’s join study gathering.

Dear fellow toastmasters, is toastmaster a great system for learning? The answer is clear no doubt absolutely right, because so many researches and evidences can prove that. For example in manual speech session when we are the speaker we have to write the composition according to manual’s objectives before we deliver our speech, manual can teach us how to organize our speech and catch audience’s attention then we can deliver our speech efficient. In current society so many people can’t present their mind efficiently even he is a doctor, they are smart but they don’t know how to communicate, the reason is their composition skill is not good. And The National Commission on Writing they did a research on Business Roundtable’s members in 2004, the report shows that more then 50% companies agree composition skill is important skill for promotion and more then 80% companies will chouse the employee who has high composition skill when they want to hire a person, and in Harvard they force students to join Freshman Writing Tutorial, because they would like to train the future leaders thinking organizing and presenting logically. Composition can train us organizing and thinking logically. So many people agree that composition skill is very important and how lucky we are toastmasters help us to improve this important skill and in the same time we also can improve our English, because we use English to write the script when we write the composition we practice English in the same time. But unfortunately we just hold meetings twice a month, according to my experience that is not enough. When we write the composition usually we will face two problems one is “my English is not good”, because we not use our mother language to write the composition, so you might don’t know which word can describe your thought, you need to improve your English first, there is no short cut only one way can improve your English that is “practice” you need find more chance to practice regular meeting is not enough for you, so we hold study gathering create more chance for you, you should cease the opportunity to join every study gathering. And another problem is “it is difficult to find the topic”, yes so many members told me that they didn’t know what they could write. According to a newspaper editor his observing why children’s composition skill descent, because they seldom do reading and their life are so boring no life experience only school cram school, so not thing can write, if you could not find the topic easily you might have the same problem with those children, so we hold study gathering we can read together share personal experience with each other and discuss together then you can make your viewpoints and experiences plentiful that will be easy to find the topic.

In table topic session, it can train your thinking speed after you hear the question you don’t have so much time to think you must answer quickly, you practice more time your reaction ability can be better and better. When I was a table topic speaker, normally I thought why did you ask this kind of question? I never think about that how can I answer, maybe you have the same problem. So we need to join study gathering, because we will discuss different topics in different study gatherings we will find some topic which we seldom think and we can get more experience from other people their opinion then we can have more experience to answer table topic question.

For a good communicator the first step is listening then finds the wick point to persuade with your audiences let them accept your viewpoints, in evaluation session as an evaluator you have chance to practice this ability you should listen to the speech analyze the speech then tell audiences your viewpoint you should find a good way to communicate with them let them accept your thought, but it is not only one way to communicate, because every one has his own personality you should use his way to communicate with him, so you need to talk to more people you should communicate often, and study gathering gives you more chance to do it.

According to research, people learn by listening they only can remember 10% people learn by watching they only can remember 20%, but you learning by reacting you can remember 70% and though experiencing you can remember 80%, so in toastmasters we will learn by doing it is a real great study system, but only twice a month it is not enough, so we hold study gathering we practice in study gathering study gathering afford more chance to practice for you.

2008/10/07 Tina Wen's A1 Speech

A1 speech(Warm Up Your Audience, 5 to 7 minutes) by Tina Wen
Title: What will you do in the future? delivered on Sep. 2 (AMTC)

(Opening)
One day, some celebrities were standing around a newborn baby.
Then the general said, “Look! He’ll be a general in the future. I can see from the way he kicked!
A bank president said, “No. From the way he made a fist, I think he’ll be a banker.”
Finally, a president said, “I believe he will be a president in the future. Look, he is still wearing a smile when pee his pants and wet his bed.

(Body)
What will you do in the future? When I was an elementary school student, my friends often asked me this question. Come on, I was only six, how did I know? But here came the problem, the most common topic you had in the composition class is “What will you do in the future?” To write a composition was really difficult for a kid. The first idea I got was to be a teacher! I want to be a teacher! My teacher is the most powerful one in the world. So I wrote, “One day I will be a teacher because I can punish my students freely and feel no guilty.”

Then I entered junior high, I became an independent teenager, not a stupid kid anymore. At that time, I disliked teachers, parents, rules and social values. In order to show I’m special, in the composition class, I chose so-called “tyrant” to be my idol. “I want to be someone like Emperor Qin Shi Huang because he was cool. He had the Great Wall of China built. And it was the only construction that Neil Armstrong could see when he walked on the moon surface. Qin Shi Huang was cool because he unified the Chinese units of measurement such as weights, measures and currency. The only thing he lost was that he didn’t burn out all books so that’s why I have to study in this stupid classroom.” I didn’t know how I got the courage to write it. Luckily, my teacher seemed to be open-minded. And I still got an A.

The Emperor of Qin Dynasty didn’t affect me much. When I became a high school student, I was still a normal person. Under the pressure of entering a good college, I stopped dreaming, and followed my parents’ expectation- to be a doctor. I knew almost nothing about being a doctor. People said it was a job with high salary and status. And the most important is that I would have the chance to marry the son of hospital’s executives. I pushed myself to study courses I was uninterested. Of course, my grade was like a patient with weak heartbeat…expired finally.

(Conclusion)
”No matter what they tell you,No matter what they do,No matter what they teach you,What you believe is true.”

When listening to this song, I realized something. Just like the lyrics, I can’t deny what I believe. And I can't be what I'm not. Now if you ask me my dreams, I’ll say, “I hope I’ll have courage to pursue my dreams. No matter it’s easy to realize or not.” “I hope that no matter I want to be a teacher, a doctor or a superstar, no matter I succeed or not, I’ll enjoy every moment and have fun.”
