2008/09/02 Roger Chen's C6 speech

C6 speech ( Vocal Variety, 5 to 7 minutes)
Title: You are disqualified!
Delivered on 2008/9/2(AMTC)

Objective:
• Use voice volume, pitch, rate, and quality to reflect and add meaning and interest to your message..
• Use pauses to enhance your message.
• Use vocal variety smoothly and naturally.

(Opening)
Thinking the situation: you spent a lot of time to prepare your speech, you have written a script and revised it several times, you rehearsed again and again almost you can remember every word in you script. Finally you delivered your speech in meeting, thanks god, you didn’t forget to many sentences, but your evaluator said: you are disqualified! What do you feel in that time?

(Body)
My dear fellow members,

In our life, not everything is perfect, somethings we faced some unexpected situation like you fail a speech or test, you lose a big customer or even you are fired by your company. In that time, you might feel lost something in your mind especially when you put a lot of effort on the job. Yes, it is called as frustration. We used to face frustration in our life. How do you cope with frustration.

For most people, the first feeling is lose. Oh! I am a loser, I lose again like I use to be. I remember when I was 16 or 17 years old, I still desire love, but in that time I was fat so my friends called me fatty, and grils do not like to date with a fatty boy like you have been watched from movies. Therefore, I tried to make gril friends by mail, that means someone gave me a girl's name and address, and I wrote letters to her but we didn’t see each other in that time. Since I am good at writing, so I usually can got a chance to date with the gril. Because we never meet each other, so we usually select a public location such as train station or department store to meet (the old President department store is a good place to meet your ‘letter friends’) and we used to ask the other to bring something as a clue to identified each other. For example, I will bring a rose and the gril will bring a book. The time’s up and the answer is disclosed, we meet each other. But, almost every time, that gril said ‘sorry, I have to go because I have a urgent thing, bye’ or ‘sorry, I am not Miss Wu, you got the wrong person’ After then the girl disappeared, even I still write letter to her. Oh! I lose again! I fail again!
The second reaction to frustration is angry, you might feel angry to who makes you feel frustration, or even you feel angry to yourself. Angry is a normal reaction to frustration, you feel angry because you care about it. However, the point is your reaction after you feel angry, you become positive or negatieve. Once you have a negative thinking toward the frustration, you will become ‘withdraw’ that means you will try to escape, you don’t want to try again. So, I didn’t make ‘letter gril friends’ anymore, because my heart is broken. However, if you keep a positive thinking, you will review yourself and learning from the frustration, then you will have courage to try again and do it better.

We usually to talk about ‘EQ’ nowadays, and recognise EQ is a very important factor to make people more successful. The ability to cope with frustration is the key to elevate your EQ. In my opinion, Toastmasters is a very good place to help you improve the ability of deal with frustration. You have to deliver speechs and your evaluators will give you suggestions. Somethings, you are be disqualified and you should deliver speech again and again and you might feel frustration. You should say ‘thank you’ to your evaluator, because they also have to has enough courage to say ‘you are disqualified’! Moreover, Toastmasters is also a good place to let you try again and again and members always give you positive suggestions. I real business situation, people do not offer you too many chances to try!

(Conclusion)
My dear fellow members, no one is perfect, that is why we are here. We try to find out our unperfected part and learn how to improve it. So, please keep positive manner if your evaluator said ‘ You are disqualified’!, because they help you recognize your unperfected part and offer you a chance to do it again. So, Thank you Toastmaster!
