Script for Best Speaker, Wayne Hsiao, of Meeting No.290

C01 Speech ( The Ice Breaker - 4 to 6 minutes )
Title : Hello! I'm Wayne                                          by Wayne Hsiao 2015/10/06(AMTC)

*Objective:
1.To begin speaking before an audience.
2.To discover speaking skills you already have and skills that need some attention.

(Opening)
If one day you have a chance to become a superhero. Who do you want to be? Superman, Spiderman? Or ... Batman? This is my answer - Batman. In my opinion, batman is not only a cool superhero but also a combination of ninja, martial art master, scientist and detective. He got his abilities by constantly training and study. That is why he is so attractive and special to me. And you know, batman's name is Bruce Wayne. So I decided to pick "Wayne" as my name.
Toast master, dear fellow members and guests. Good evening! I'm Wayne

(Body)
Thirty-two years ago, I was born in Gangshan(岡山). Then I lived with my grandparents in Luzhu(路竹) until I was five years old. Despite heartwarming memories, living with my grandparents also let me learn how to speak Taiwanese.
Now, I live near the Minzu overpass(民族路橋) and I work in Linyuan(林園). My job is a drafter and my duty is to use cad software to make drawings. But my work requires me to sit in front of computer more than six hours a day. Sometimes, even more than ten hours a day. So I got severe backache around 5 years ago. It was really hurt! I couldn't sleep well. I couldn't focus on my work. And I even lost my patience in my life. Then one day, I found an interesting video on youtube. I saw a woman who is doing yoga. I still remember what she said in that video. She said " Doing yoga is not only beneficial for us to relax our body, but also helpful for us to soften our mind." Then I thought "Maybe, this is what I need." So I began to practice some simple yoga before going to bed. And truth be told, it really improves my sleeping quality and let me have more patience to deal with my daily work.
In other hands, I don't have many chances to use English in my work. And sometimes I even don't need to talk to people when I was working. So my friend suggested me that I can go to Toastmaster to practice English and make more friends. Then I came here-ALE MAX. I heard many interesting and valuable stories since I was here. Such as like photograph , skiing, working experience, traveling and life stories. Furthermore, I also learned how to make cookies and how to decorate and paint T-shirt. All of these really colorful my life and broaden my horizons.

(Conclusion)

Because of yoga, I became more and more interested in Indian culture. So today, I want to share with you a sentence I heard from the Bollywood movie - 3 Idiots. That is "Ah-Lis-Wel". That means everything is ok and everything will be fine. And guess what, I thought that is Hindi at first. But when I turn back to see the subtitle, I found that it is English. It's "All is well." Maybe that's because Indian have special accent when they speak English. Finally, wish you have a good night and "All is well". Toastmaster.

2011/07/19 C4 Speech - Sophia Lu (Best Speaker)

Title: Your Positive Words

Dear fellow members and guests, good evening!

Since my project in Competent Communicator manual this time is “How to say it!”, so before starting, I would like all of you to see the following film. Here you are!

~ (Film plays)

“Words are powerful to everyone. We can change our attitude by someone’s words with insight or be healed by someone’s words with comfort. It’s so obvious in this film.

We had this kind of experience since childhood and can see the same situation in the office or at home. Like a mother scolding the child “How can I have such a child as you?” or your boss yelling at you “Even the pig is smarter than you.”

Actually verbal violence, just like physical violence; will injure people. Perhaps it’s even worse, because damage to the body will heal, but damage to the mind lasts forever.

Now let me show you some pictures, they are:

Picture 1: very funny, is it? But if you are the employee, can you laugh comfortably? I doubt it.

Picture 2: Once my teacher told me that a row of bushes, if people walk cross the same place on it, what will that place become? The bush no longer will grow and it will turn to dirt slowly.

My boss likes to say “You only do office work, if even that you cannot do well, then you are really useless."Or my sister always says “How come our looks are like mother like daughter, but the words you say are so stupid." It makes me feel like I am a loser and a total failure. But, I became the loser, because others “MAKE” me so.

Positive language can make us better
Looking at a boss scolding an employee, attacking him for a long time, the boss is indifferent, he does not care, but the verbal damage could have serious consequences. Being an employer, you must be very careful with the way you speak to the employee, do not insult or ridicule the person who is making money for you. Do not use the method of goading someone into action, as they may lack self-confidence, goading them will just make things worse.

Before you scold him with something like “even the pig is smarter than you”, please think twice, is he really that bad? If he will help your business and share sorrow for you, please do not scold him or call him a pig, because a pig cannot do these things.

The new officer team of ALE MAX can hopefully receive positive responses from our members; with your support we will be better and better. Your positive words will be the best gift this coming year.

2011/07/05 Lillian's A3 Speech

A3 speech: The Persuasive Approach, 5 to 7 minutes
Title: Control Your Nervousness

Day dream: (演)
TM: Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me to welcome the best speaker of ALE MAX, Lillian Tseng.
Lillian Tseng: It’s my honor to get this award; I have worked so hard to memorize my speech and kick away my nervousness. Thank you! Thank you!
TM: Lillian, wake up!

Oops! I am so sorry! Speaking in front of an audience is not easy. My hands are sweaty and getting cold, my heart is pounding, my knees are shaking, and I can’t remember what I wanted to say. Most of you may feel the same when you stand on stage. I have been through it. I delivered my C1 speech in 2003 and C2 in 2005; that's almost 2 years between these speeches. Why? Because I was afraid to delivery a speech. For most of my speeches I had to do them twice. But, I did not run away; I did other assignments such as being TM, TT, or GE to grab every chance I can to speak on stage. I have conquered my fears. Now, I'm here to talk about the 10 tips that can help you control your nervousness.
(show the powerpoint)
1. Know your material. Pick a topic you’re interested in. Use humor, personal story and simple sentences to say it. This way you won’t forget easily what to say.
2. Practice. Practice. Practice. Rehearse; estimate the time; practice with the props you need. This can help you delivery your speech smoothly.
3. Know the audience. Arrive early, greet audience members individually. It’s easier to speak to friends than to strangers.
4. Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area, test the microphone, set up equipments such as the projector.
5. Relax. Relax your body, take a deep breath, and count to 3 before you say anything.
6. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, with the right volume and tone. Visualize the audience give you applauses.
7. Realize that people want you to succeed. Audience want to listen to an interesting, informative and entertaining speech, they’re rooting for you.
8. Don’t apologize. Audience may not notice anything unusual until you started to apologize profusely.
9. Concentrate on the message. Focus your attention on the message and the audience, not your nervousness.
10. Gain experience. Your speech reflects you. The more speeches you do the more experience you get. Experience builds confidence.

These 10 tips are all listed on the back of your CC manual.

I was one of the nervous speakers. My mind goes blank when I stand on stage. But there is no easy way or shortcuts to become successful. You will need to do your speech over and over again. Try to get more chances to stand in front of the audience. With practice you get experience, and experience builds confidence. I believe the Toastmasters process can make you become a better speaker. Like the slogan our president set for this year: Affirm Yourself, Surpass Yourself (肯定自己,超越自己). One day, you will say goodbye to your nervousness.
Mr. Toastmaster.

09/01/2009 Roger Chen's C10 Speech

C10 speech ( Inspire Your Audience, 8 to 10 minutes)
Title: 805 Days
Speaker: Roger Chen date: 2009/09/01

Objective:
• To inspire the audience by appealing to noble motives and challenging the audience to achieve a higher level of beliefs or achievement.
• Appeal to the audience’s needs and emotions, using stories, anecdotes and quotes to add drama.
• Avoid using notes.

(Opening)
I didn’t have any idea when Julie called me last saturday night for asking about my speech title. Yes, I know I have to deliver my C10 speech today about 1 month ago, and it is very important to my toastmaster career. However, I didn’t know how to inspire you and this is my project objective- Inspire your audience.

So I found out all my Toastmaster things and turn my memory back to the first day when I joined Toastmaster meeting. It was Dragon Boat Festival in 2007, I received a phone call from Lillian Tseng for inviting me to attend meeting. I still remember our current president Jane made an Education Orientation in the meeting, I was impressive and I decided to become a member immediately after Lillian Chen’s introduction. Until now, it is 805 days since I signed up for a Toastmaster member. So, I want to review the changes happened in my life during the 805 days.

(Body)
My dear fellow members,

Why do you join Toastmasters? For improving your English ability? or you want to learn how to deliver a successful speech in public? maybe you just want to make friends. or you were cheated by a super Toastmaster sales like Jason. Whatever your answer is, how you feel now? Do you satisfy with ALE MAX?

The first time I knew Toastmaster club was from a book for business English learning. The author who is a senior Toastmaster and he suggests readers to join the club for keeping an environment to practice English and learn from each other. So, I surfed the information about Toastmaster from Internet and I found there were 4 Toastmaster clubs in Kaohsiung City at that time. I decided to contact Ale Max because: first I only available in Tuesday night, second, the former meeting venue: Magic Lisa is near my home.
After then, Toastmaster came to my life, of couse it changes my life a lot, especially when I need to deliver a manual speech. I used to rehearsed speech serval times and my children might see their father like a dummy because I always mumble to air and sometimes with strange postures. As I deliver more speech, I become more confident.

In Toastmaster, I also share about myself and my family with you, I told you how to cut off 20% weight, I told you how to find a good folding bike as well as how to protect from computer virus. Moreover, I let you know my son’s little bird story and maybe you all remembered, how can I have a son after 2 daughters, ya the secrete is up side down!

Because part of my job is to help business cost down so sometimes I have to fire unqualified employees. In order to protect my family, I rarely tell other people about myself. And actually I don’t have many friends, I tend to keep distance with others. However, since you are my friends so I can share with you.

To me, Toastmaster is a typical learning organization, which is an ideal organization type quoted by management textbooks and it is hard to find in real business world. People join Toastmaster not for degree, or to show off themselves. Most people join Toastmaster only for self improvement. The improvement might come from yourself and other members. So, I really like the evaluation session, our evaluators used to give speakers valuable and concrete suggestions to help us make speech better. Especially opinions from senior Toastmaster members they are all proficient speakers and kindly to share their experience.

(Conclusion)
My dear fellow members,
I think people should have different goals in every life stage. When you are 25, maybe your goal is to find a good job. And your life goal might change to find a person to get marry when you are 30 or over. Then you will have children and your career goal might change again. However, real life not always smoothly like story. But the worst thing to me is to lose goal. Because I will stop thinking and stop dedicate to growth.

What is your goal in this moment? Why are you set over here? You can stay at sweet home to watch soap opera like ‘mother’s home‘ or playing online games, even MSN with your friends. Yes, we are here because we want to help each other become better! That is what Toastmaster offers.

So, please setup your goal, schedule your progress just followed the Toastmaster’s two tracks. This is very important because you will keep energy in join regular meeting and never get tired. The more meeting we join the more improve we get! Just like the Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs told to the Standford graduate students:

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

We all know now is a tough time in Taiwan, the economy still bad and we have to face the impact from typhon and flood. Maybe you are not satisfy your job or your life now. However, the troubled times are the prime time for Toastmasters! Because we learn how to be both a good communicator and a good leader and that are essential for every work! Just be optimistic! The opportunity is for the person who prepare well!

In Toastmaster you don’t need to compete with others but yourself.
Thank you, Toastmaster of evening!

2008/11/18 Tina Chang's C1 Speech

Hi, everyone! My name is Tina. I’m now a senior in National Kaohsiung Normal University. I major in Chinese Literature. Talking about my personality, I think I am a brave girl and like to challenge things that people think I can’t do. I’ve joined Taiwanese speech competition even though I can’t make any Taiwanese sentence. I wrote down the speech in Chinese and then memorized by listening how my dad pronounce. When my friends heard I was joining a Taiwanese speech, they were surprised and said, “Tina! What are you doing? You should join English speech! Why are you joining in Taiwanese speech?” Well, I’ve already tried English speech when I was 13 and I won the first place. I just wanted to try something different.
I have worked in summer camp in America with only one Taiwanese girl. The other co-works came from everywhere around the world. We worked together for almost 10 weeks. Also, I traveled alone to New York and Philadelphia by guide book. It was an unforgettable experience. I met a lot of nice people and got a lot of help from them. I remembered one time I was going down the road and suddenly came up a man. He asked me, ”where are you come from?” When I answered Taiwan, he was so exciting and said “OH! Cheng Ming Wang! Did you go inside Yankee’s stadium and watch the game?” Actually I was not that interesting on baseball so I answered “yes, I watched his game on TV!”
Besides of brave, I have a benevolent feeling towards all animals. Zoo is one of my favorite places. I can spend one day doing nothing but just looking at lions. There is a can with feeding stuff in my motorcycle just in case to feed stray cats. I once saved a 2-month big stray cat. He was so small and sweet. I helped him to find a new owner. The animal I am keeping now is a dog. Her name is Chapi. She was a stray dog. I found her few weeks ago. She’s nice and sweet. She doesn’t bark unless necessary. Stitch is her favorites. Her habits is to observe what everyone is doing just like an obason(歐巴桑). She follows me everywhere around my home and wants to join everything happened. It is good to have her as a companion. I feel warm when I see her waiting for me by the door.
There are still a lot of things that I can share with you about myself. However, I only get 4 minutes to share. It is nice to join Toastmasters. I hope I can be friends of every one of you. Thank you for your listening.

2008/11/04 Fion Chou's C1 Speech

Good morning
You must be confused because I am saying good morning to you all. In our office, this slogan is our opening when ever we have a meeting. It means to say hello to your audience and catch their eyes. Now, from your faces, I am sure I have caught your eyes.

Dear fellow members,
Long time no see. My name is Fion. Actually, I was a member of Toastmaster’s in ALE MAX. So I am a recycled member as Mayna said before. Standing here, I still feel nervous, even though I have already been to several toastmaster meetings. Can you see, my feet are shaking and I feel like a girl going to see her mother in law; but I am also happy to introduce myself to your. Due to a change in my job position, I had to quit toastmasters temporarily. During the past time, when I occasionally met some of your members, it helped me remember the atmosphere whether it was nervous or funny. So here I am.

My hobbies are watching TV and traveling. I can relieve my stress through these hobbies. Through travel, I learn more interesting things. I am not a religious person but an experience I had was unbelievable. In 2002, I traveled to Egypt and we visited a grave under the ground. We saw a coffin with no body inside and the tour guide told us that if you touched the coffin, you would be punished. I did not believe him and I touched it. I didn’t care about this kind of thing and I also forgot what I had done. Unfortunately, something really happened to make me believe in the curse. After one month, I had a car accident with a poor man. I broke his leg and he needed to have an operation. Can you guess how much money I paid him in the end? “Three hundred thousand dollars”, so you can’t help to believe in the curse from Egypt.

I work for an animal nutrition company, which imports ingredients and produces animal feed for poultry and swine farms. You may know my company if you have been to the Dream MALL. My company, CARGILL, is located on Chen Kong road across from Dream MALL. If you look across Chen Kong road, you will see the plant over there. I have worked at our company for eleven years and I am the office administrator. My responsibility is to make sure the office runs smoothly. By the way, I would like to do a survey with you, if you don’t go to Dream MALL, please raise your hand. The survey question is: “ Do you smell bad air when you go shopping in Dream Mall? Do you smell bad air when you go shopping in Dream Mall? If you answer “yes”, CARGILL may be forced to move away from Kaohsiung city and my job will disappear. I am kidding!

To join ALE MAX toastmaster club again is an important decision for me. Until now, every thing has been wonderful and jointing these meetings enriches my life. Thanks to you all for giving me a happy environment to learn in with all of you. Toastmasters.

2008/10/21 Jason Wu's A17 Speech

A 17 Title: Let’s join study gathering speaker: Jason Wu
Project: The Technical Speech date: 10/21/2008
Time: 8 to 10 minutes

Objectives:
Convert a technical paper or technical material and information into a technical speech.
Organize a technical speech according to the inverted-pyramid approach.
Write a technical speech as “spoken language,” not as an article.
Give the speech by effectively reading out loud.

In Toastmasters club we can learn English communication skill and leadership, so we came here for those skills, but our meetings just hold twice a month it is not enough let us to improve those skills we need more chance to practice, study gathering provide such opportunity, so let’s join study gathering.

Dear fellow toastmasters, is toastmaster a great system for learning? The answer is clear no doubt absolutely right, because so many researches and evidences can prove that. For example in manual speech session when we are the speaker we have to write the composition according to manual’s objectives before we deliver our speech, manual can teach us how to organize our speech and catch audience’s attention then we can deliver our speech efficient. In current society so many people can’t present their mind efficiently even he is a doctor, they are smart but they don’t know how to communicate, the reason is their composition skill is not good. And The National Commission on Writing they did a research on Business Roundtable’s members in 2004, the report shows that more then 50% companies agree composition skill is important skill for promotion and more then 80% companies will chouse the employee who has high composition skill when they want to hire a person, and in Harvard they force students to join Freshman Writing Tutorial, because they would like to train the future leaders thinking organizing and presenting logically. Composition can train us organizing and thinking logically. So many people agree that composition skill is very important and how lucky we are toastmasters help us to improve this important skill and in the same time we also can improve our English, because we use English to write the script when we write the composition we practice English in the same time. But unfortunately we just hold meetings twice a month, according to my experience that is not enough. When we write the composition usually we will face two problems one is “my English is not good”, because we not use our mother language to write the composition, so you might don’t know which word can describe your thought, you need to improve your English first, there is no short cut only one way can improve your English that is “practice” you need find more chance to practice regular meeting is not enough for you, so we hold study gathering create more chance for you, you should cease the opportunity to join every study gathering. And another problem is “it is difficult to find the topic”, yes so many members told me that they didn’t know what they could write. According to a newspaper editor his observing why children’s composition skill descent, because they seldom do reading and their life are so boring no life experience only school cram school, so not thing can write, if you could not find the topic easily you might have the same problem with those children, so we hold study gathering we can read together share personal experience with each other and discuss together then you can make your viewpoints and experiences plentiful that will be easy to find the topic.

In table topic session, it can train your thinking speed after you hear the question you don’t have so much time to think you must answer quickly, you practice more time your reaction ability can be better and better. When I was a table topic speaker, normally I thought why did you ask this kind of question? I never think about that how can I answer, maybe you have the same problem. So we need to join study gathering, because we will discuss different topics in different study gatherings we will find some topic which we seldom think and we can get more experience from other people their opinion then we can have more experience to answer table topic question.

For a good communicator the first step is listening then finds the wick point to persuade with your audiences let them accept your viewpoints, in evaluation session as an evaluator you have chance to practice this ability you should listen to the speech analyze the speech then tell audiences your viewpoint you should find a good way to communicate with them let them accept your thought, but it is not only one way to communicate, because every one has his own personality you should use his way to communicate with him, so you need to talk to more people you should communicate often, and study gathering gives you more chance to do it.

According to research, people learn by listening they only can remember 10% people learn by watching they only can remember 20%, but you learning by reacting you can remember 70% and though experiencing you can remember 80%, so in toastmasters we will learn by doing it is a real great study system, but only twice a month it is not enough, so we hold study gathering we practice in study gathering study gathering afford more chance to practice for you.

2008/10/07 Tina Wen's A1 Speech

A1 speech(Warm Up Your Audience, 5 to 7 minutes) by Tina Wen
Title: What will you do in the future? delivered on Sep. 2 (AMTC)

(Opening)
One day, some celebrities were standing around a newborn baby.
Then the general said, “Look! He’ll be a general in the future. I can see from the way he kicked!
A bank president said, “No. From the way he made a fist, I think he’ll be a banker.”
Finally, a president said, “I believe he will be a president in the future. Look, he is still wearing a smile when pee his pants and wet his bed.

(Body)
What will you do in the future? When I was an elementary school student, my friends often asked me this question. Come on, I was only six, how did I know? But here came the problem, the most common topic you had in the composition class is “What will you do in the future?” To write a composition was really difficult for a kid. The first idea I got was to be a teacher! I want to be a teacher! My teacher is the most powerful one in the world. So I wrote, “One day I will be a teacher because I can punish my students freely and feel no guilty.”

Then I entered junior high, I became an independent teenager, not a stupid kid anymore. At that time, I disliked teachers, parents, rules and social values. In order to show I’m special, in the composition class, I chose so-called “tyrant” to be my idol. “I want to be someone like Emperor Qin Shi Huang because he was cool. He had the Great Wall of China built. And it was the only construction that Neil Armstrong could see when he walked on the moon surface. Qin Shi Huang was cool because he unified the Chinese units of measurement such as weights, measures and currency. The only thing he lost was that he didn’t burn out all books so that’s why I have to study in this stupid classroom.” I didn’t know how I got the courage to write it. Luckily, my teacher seemed to be open-minded. And I still got an A.

The Emperor of Qin Dynasty didn’t affect me much. When I became a high school student, I was still a normal person. Under the pressure of entering a good college, I stopped dreaming, and followed my parents’ expectation- to be a doctor. I knew almost nothing about being a doctor. People said it was a job with high salary and status. And the most important is that I would have the chance to marry the son of hospital’s executives. I pushed myself to study courses I was uninterested. Of course, my grade was like a patient with weak heartbeat…expired finally.

(Conclusion)
”No matter what they tell you,No matter what they do,No matter what they teach you,What you believe is true.”

When listening to this song, I realized something. Just like the lyrics, I can’t deny what I believe. And I can't be what I'm not. Now if you ask me my dreams, I’ll say, “I hope I’ll have courage to pursue my dreams. No matter it’s easy to realize or not.” “I hope that no matter I want to be a teacher, a doctor or a superstar, no matter I succeed or not, I’ll enjoy every moment and have fun.”

2008/09/02 Roger Chen's C6 speech

C6 speech ( Vocal Variety, 5 to 7 minutes)
Title: You are disqualified!
Delivered on 2008/9/2(AMTC)

Objective:
• Use voice volume, pitch, rate, and quality to reflect and add meaning and interest to your message..
• Use pauses to enhance your message.
• Use vocal variety smoothly and naturally.

(Opening)
Thinking the situation: you spent a lot of time to prepare your speech, you have written a script and revised it several times, you rehearsed again and again almost you can remember every word in you script. Finally you delivered your speech in meeting, thanks god, you didn’t forget to many sentences, but your evaluator said: you are disqualified! What do you feel in that time?

(Body)
My dear fellow members,

In our life, not everything is perfect, somethings we faced some unexpected situation like you fail a speech or test, you lose a big customer or even you are fired by your company. In that time, you might feel lost something in your mind especially when you put a lot of effort on the job. Yes, it is called as frustration. We used to face frustration in our life. How do you cope with frustration.

For most people, the first feeling is lose. Oh! I am a loser, I lose again like I use to be. I remember when I was 16 or 17 years old, I still desire love, but in that time I was fat so my friends called me fatty, and grils do not like to date with a fatty boy like you have been watched from movies. Therefore, I tried to make gril friends by mail, that means someone gave me a girl's name and address, and I wrote letters to her but we didn’t see each other in that time. Since I am good at writing, so I usually can got a chance to date with the gril. Because we never meet each other, so we usually select a public location such as train station or department store to meet (the old President department store is a good place to meet your ‘letter friends’) and we used to ask the other to bring something as a clue to identified each other. For example, I will bring a rose and the gril will bring a book. The time’s up and the answer is disclosed, we meet each other. But, almost every time, that gril said ‘sorry, I have to go because I have a urgent thing, bye’ or ‘sorry, I am not Miss Wu, you got the wrong person’ After then the girl disappeared, even I still write letter to her. Oh! I lose again! I fail again!
The second reaction to frustration is angry, you might feel angry to who makes you feel frustration, or even you feel angry to yourself. Angry is a normal reaction to frustration, you feel angry because you care about it. However, the point is your reaction after you feel angry, you become positive or negatieve. Once you have a negative thinking toward the frustration, you will become ‘withdraw’ that means you will try to escape, you don’t want to try again. So, I didn’t make ‘letter gril friends’ anymore, because my heart is broken. However, if you keep a positive thinking, you will review yourself and learning from the frustration, then you will have courage to try again and do it better.

We usually to talk about ‘EQ’ nowadays, and recognise EQ is a very important factor to make people more successful. The ability to cope with frustration is the key to elevate your EQ. In my opinion, Toastmasters is a very good place to help you improve the ability of deal with frustration. You have to deliver speechs and your evaluators will give you suggestions. Somethings, you are be disqualified and you should deliver speech again and again and you might feel frustration. You should say ‘thank you’ to your evaluator, because they also have to has enough courage to say ‘you are disqualified’! Moreover, Toastmasters is also a good place to let you try again and again and members always give you positive suggestions. I real business situation, people do not offer you too many chances to try!

(Conclusion)
My dear fellow members, no one is perfect, that is why we are here. We try to find out our unperfected part and learn how to improve it. So, please keep positive manner if your evaluator said ‘ You are disqualified’!, because they help you recognize your unperfected part and offer you a chance to do it again. So, Thank you Toastmaster!

2008/07/15 Tina Wen's C10 speech

C10 speech(Inspire Your Audience , 8 to10 minutes) by Tina Wen
Title: Try it! July 15 (AMTC)

(Opening)
I’d like to show you two photos. It’s the first one. I know what you’re thinking---beautiful. Then next one, delicious…I mean the beef. Can you tell the difference between them? It’s my straight teeth! Maybe it’s nothing to you, but it’s significant to me. Because my teeth were all messed up. I used to cover my mouth when laughing. I was so embarrassed. Last year, at 25 years old, I decided to wear the braces like a school girl. Why? The story should start with my mom.

(Body)
My mom thought her daughter could be the best in the world. So she tried to help me succeed by nagging me everyday. One day she said, “You come here! Twenty-five years ago, I gave birth to a fine healthy baby. And she was so beautiful. What’s wrong with you now? Look, your eyes are smaller, your nose is bigger, your teeth are crooked and you’re fat.. Your butt is bigger but your breasts are smaller. You’re taller but your mind is shorter!

I really didn’t listen to my mom, after all “like mother, like daughter.”

However, I still looked at myself in the mirror. Well, my eyes are smaller, but I have broader view. My butt is bigger, but then I can sit better. And my breast…(Cough). What we should really care about is their “Function!” But I knew I was really unhappy with my teeth. Maybe it was time to change and make myself better! People said that wearing braces is terrible. Before I went to see the dentist, it’d better get some advise from my consultants.

First, I went to meet my friend Patrick. He said, “No, you can’t! Wearing braces is terrible. You’ll look weird and ugly. You’ll feel pain and eat nothing! And when will it stop? If you have braces today, you’ll have double eyelid surgery tomorrow, then a nose job, facelift, bone reduction and skin whitening. Finally, you’ll become… “Venus?” I said. “No. Michael Jackson.”

Then I went to my friend Aileen. When heard this news, she was excited and said, “Wow! That’s cool! You’ll be a shinning star, and never feel hungry again “Why?”“Because everything you eat will all get stuck in your braces. Whenever you feel hungry can always have a snack.

At last, I turned to the fortune teller. He gave a mysterious smile, and said “Girl, you look pale. If you want to make yourself better, you need 3C’s. First, you need to “Change.” Then you need “Courage.” The most important thing is… “Cash!” His suggestions were practical. I made up my mind to change, and now I have built up the courage. As for cash…Can anyone help?

Finally I went to see the dentist. When I opened my mouth, he said that I didn’t need to wear braces. I was so surprised that the he refused to get money from my pocket! He asked me to stand up and turned right and left…then smiled! He was in deep thought. It seemed that he realized he still has three children to raise and mortgage to pay. So at last he said, “ok, you do need to wear it.” And these words changed my life. Once the braces were on, I found it was not as bad as people said. I didn’t become Michael Jackson. I ate everything… except corn! And it was easy to start a conversation with anyone because the braces were a good opening.

My fellow Toastmasters, I’m not telling you to have plastic surgery. I’m encouraging you to try things you want! We often stop doing what we want because of others’ different voices. We ignore the little voice inside our heart because others’ are too loud. But if you never try you’ll never know. Do you believe in yourself? Don’t hesitate to try even though people say it’s difficult. Give it a try. You’ll get two answers---“Yes” or “No.” The probability of being successful is at least 50%. But if you never try, it would be zero. So now, my dear Toastmasters, follow your heart! Chase your love! Send your money to my account…!

2008/07/01 Roger Chen's C5 Speech

C5 speech (Your Body Speaks, 5 to 7 minutes)
by Roger Chen

Title: Like father like son
Delivered on 2008/7/1(AMTC)

Objective:
• Use stance, movement, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact toexpress tour message and achieve your speech’s purpose.
• Make your body language smooth and natural.
• Focus on methods of delivery, but do not overlook speech content.

(Opening)
As you all know I am specialized in produce ‘babies’, but today I don’t want totell you how to ‘produce’ more babies. Because most of you are single, I’d liketo tell you how my son influences my live.

(Body)
Good evening, my dear fellow members,I have three children, two girls and one boy. Of course son is the youngest one. Some of you might criticize me ‘conservative’ because you might though that Iwant a son to inherit my property, but the fact is: it is an accident. My wife was33 when she found we might have a new baby, in that time my older daughter is9 years old and the younger is 5. Actually, I was not welcome the baby in mymind because I afraid I might have one more daughter that my house willbecome 3,000 kg. However, I told to my wife: you make the decision and I willalways support you, whatever you decide to keep or not. Thanks God, my wifedecide to keep the baby and finally we have a son.I found boy is totally different from girl and someone tell me son is the shadowreflected from father. I agree with. My son always do what I did in my childrenhood. He always make a lot of fun to our family, for example, one day he told us thathe is a magician and he will show a magic to us. Then he took off his pants toshowed his bird and said: look! It is a small bird, and he started to swing hisbird, and said: ‘See! It become a big bird! How powerful I am! Dad and ma, Ishowed this magic to my classmate, and the girls said I am a super hero. I willdo it again tomorrow! Oh! We were shocked! However, his grandma (of courseshe is my dear ma) told me, Don’t be shocked you did the same thing when youwere 6 years old!The younger boy always ask the same question, for example, when we tookshower together, he asked me ‘dad, why your bird is so big and has long hair? Why my bird is so small?

(Conclusion)
Is he funny? I believe each child is parents’ angel, it also a burden to parents. However, my children make power for me. Every time, I was inspired by themwhen I feel frustrated in my work. They are the energy that push me to goforward. So, do you admire me? If yes, please to look for your Mr or Miss Right, marry him or her, then you will have your baby. The angel for you send fromGod!Thank you! Toastmaster!

2008/06/17 Roger Chen's C4 Speach

C4 speech (How to say it, 5 to 7 minutes) by Roger Chen
Title: Oh! Virus! Delivered on 2008/6/17(AMTC)
Objective:
• Select the right words and sentence structure to communicate your ideas clearly, accurately and vividly.
• Use rhetorical devices to enhance and emphasize ideas.
• Eliminate jargon and unnecessary words. Use correct grammar.

(Opening)

One day, you turn on your computer, and you found the computer starts acting differently, it getting slow and slow or you can see a window pop up with messages that you don’t understand. Warming! Your computer might infected by virus.

(Body)
Good evening, my dear fellow members,
What is a computer virus? A virus is a program that "infects" files in a computer. When one of infected files is opened, the virus will start working on your computer. The intention of virus is to cause chaos and destruction to the computer. Some viruses are relatively harmless, and will only delete some files from your hard drive. However some viruses are very dangerous, and can do permanent damage to your computer.

In addition, some viruses will duplicate itself, which enables it to infect other computers. Once a virus starts to spread, it can very quickly infect a large number of computers - creating a big problem all around the world. How do viruses spread from one computer to another? The majority of viruses are spread through e-mail attachments.

So the most simple and basic way to keep away from virus is not to open any attachment that you are uncertain about, even the mail is from your friends. Because many viruses 'steal' e-mail addresses from your Outlook or Yahoo address book, and then send themselves to all your friends in your address book. I suggest you can try the ‘Google mail’, it is the most powerful mail server I ever used. The gmail can block virus mails as well as garbage mails through its novel filter system. And the most exciting function to me is that you can open most office files, such as word files or excel files, without download them to your computer. The gmail will show the file content in your browser windows, that means you can minimize the risk from download files to your computer. The action ‘download’ will make chaos to your computer if you open a file with virus, so please don’t download files as possible as you can.

Another way to protect your computer away from virus, in my opinion, is to execute virus scan before you plug-in USB flash drives (we used called as big thumb). USB Flash drives have become popular during recent times. It is a convenient way to copy files from one computer to another, we used to copy mp3 or office files through USB Flash drives. So it is a good media to computer viruses and the Windows always auto execute files in flash drives when you plug-in. As consequence, the viruses will infect your computer. So, please do not use the autorun function in Windows.

(Conclusion)
Almost every computer has antivirus software but we still face the risk from viruses. Because new viruses are produced everyday, no one antivirus software can block or kill all viruses. Therefore, to keep good habits in computer use are very important. Many friends usually ask me : what is the ultimately way to avoid virus infection? My answer is: backup your files frequently! Once virus destroys your system, you still keep your files!

2008/05/06 Jenny Hung's C7 Speech

C7 speech(research your topic, 5 to 7 minutes) by Jenny Hung
Title: turn off the light Delivered on 2008/05/06

What is the global warming? Recently, this is the hot issue. The news widely report it, the scientists extensively research it, and we, the human being, notice it. In short, by burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil and cutting down forests, we have drastically increased the amount of carbon dioxide on atmosphere and make the temperatures risen. This is the global warming, and it will causes climate change involving extreme weather, epidemics and so on beyond anything we have ever experienced
In fact, we’re already seeing the changes. The flow of ice from glaciers has more than doubled over the past decade to let sea levels rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica. More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing. All of those things are just parts of the changes we can see, but still something beneath the gloss of the changes that we don’t know.
2004, the movie, “The Day After Tomorrow”, depicted the catastrophic effects of global cooling. How could we face the nature's revenge? At that time, somebody would still think it was impossible and incredible.
2006, “An Inconvenient Truth”, former Vice President Al Gore delivered his speech to show the facts, the truth about global warming. He focused on a last-ditch, and paid all-out effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change. So far, his words are still ringing in our mind.
Global warming is real, and it’s already happening. Nowadays, global warming is not only about science, it is a political issue. It is a moral issue and we have a responsibility to do something. There are lots of ways to reduce global warming. For example, take transportation or ride bicycle to replace drive cars, use the fan not air-condition etc. But now, how many members ride bike here? We still drive and have air-conditioner.
There is a simple change I think it’s easy to do and that will collectively make a difference – turn off the light as soon as you don’t need it. On March 31st 2007, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming by turning off the lights for one hour. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. We call it as “Earth Hour”. Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
It’s easy, right? Just turn off the light before we leave or when we are not using it. Do it now, we have the power to make a difference to solve this problem. In fact, we have moral obligation to do so. Small changes to our daily routine can make big differences by helping stop global warming. Now is the time. Take the action- Turn off the Light

2007/12/18 Jenny Hung's C6 speech

C6 speech(Vocal Variety, 5 to 7 minutes)
Title: You wanna be on top?

On my C4 speech, I mentioned the show “One Million Star”. It leaded a tendency towards singing contest, as if we hold singing contest for Christmas party, right! We can see more and more similar shows on TV, “Sunday Happy Star” and “Super Idol”. People discuss it and go after the competitors, and the media cover it everyday. Why can the TV show cause such a big stir in entertainment, even in our life? They make the show so true to our life. Everyone needs a stage to present himself or herself.
All the competitors have the same hobby. They like singing. They attend the contest to show their great interests in singing and make their dreams come true. To achieve the goal, they practice once and once, rehearse again and again, lean experience from each competition and each judge’s words, and improve it step by step. Sure, someone will be eliminated in the early stage, and someone will stay at last. However, it’s just a beginning. It’s a chance and a way to stand on the stage.
“You wanna be on top?” It’s a slogan from American Next Top Model. It makes me immensely impressive. Yep, if we want to be on top, we should pay more efforts and have a try. In our life, we have a lot of opportunities. Sometimes we miss it, and sometimes we take it. So, it just depends on what we are going to do.
My fellow members, as Toastmaster, we are here because we like English. Toastmaster provides us not only a big stage to speak English, but also a chance to show ourselves and learn English. We write down the scripts to prepare, and do rehearsals once and once again. When delivering, we use the different skills we learn to enrich our speech. (eyes contact, body language, vocal variety) At last, evaluators will give some suggestions to make us become better and better. Also, language evaluator will correct our grammar, pronunciation and so on. How to find such a great club?
I still remember the first time I stood in front of you. It was Table Topic time. My mind went blank. I almost couldn’t say anything and answer the question. When I delivered C1 speech, I was shaking with nervous and afraid to see all of you. After more than one year, now I stand in front of you and deliver my C6 speech. I’m still nervous but I’m not afraid. I learn form everyone, every speech, and every meeting during these days. It’s a process to be close to top.
You wanna be on top? Snatch at every chance and learn from it. Toastmaster

2007/11/20 Lillian Tseng's C8 speech

Many years ago, there is a man wants to dating with me. When he knew I can play golf, he tried to create a connection between him and me. He told me that he always went to driving ranch to practice. I was so happy and curiosity that we have same interest we can talk about. I ask him which golf club is his favorite golf club, he was speechless. He doesn’t know there are many golf clubs in one set. Actually, he doesn’t know anything about golf. Therefore, I never went out with him again.

Ladies and Gentlemen

When I first learn how to play golf, I started learning from how to hold my golf club and tied and feel comfortable. Then I start to learn how to swing my body from top to bottom, let it looks like a semicircle shape. Then try to aim and hit the little white ball. In the first month, I did the same practice over and over again. Due to the practice, the opportunity of hitting ball becomes grater from 10% to 80%. Are the entire ball well hitting by me? Of course not. Most of the ball I hit was ground ball. Next step I learn is to practice different # of golf club. I try to adjust my stand position little by little to suit the different golf clubs, because each clubs has different height and different angle. After I learn the skill of hitting ball, I started to add power when I swing my body and hit the ball. How long have I spent on this process? 1 month? 3 months? 6 months? I spent a year to learn the basic skills. But I am still not qualified to go on golf course. I admire Tiger Woods. He started to learn golf since he was 5 years old. He is ranking #1 professional golf player in the World when he was 22 years old. He is still continuing to practice, to attend golf tournament.

Thomas Alva Edison said “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration”. Being successful, there is no short cut way, you must do it, review it, and improve little by little. Apply to the Toastmasters; first, you must step out your comfort zone. Stand on the stage, tried to conquer y our nervousness, tried to speak out to 20 people. It’s just like how to hold your golf club tie and feel comfortable. Second, you have to follow the manual to learn how to sell out yourself to audience. Third, you need a good opening to attract audience’s attention. Then, you have to pay attention on the eye contact, facial expression, body language, gestures, voice volume, voice pitch and emotion while you are speaking. It’s just like practice different # of golf clubs, try to adjust your position to suit the gold club. Think back my C1 speech in 2005, I actually fail it because over time. A year later, I did my C2 speech, I finished it on time, but I saw my script most of time. When I heard my evaluator giving comments, it’s hurt but will help me getting better. However, we still need to do C3, C4 and go on. But you need to beware the eye contact, body language, voice volume to present a well speech. It’s just like add power when I hit little white ball. I want to let the little white ball fly far and fall into right position. It really takes times to practice to achieve this goal.

In the beginning, you may shake your hands and legs; you may have shake voice; you may have unstable eye contact; you may have unorganized speech. It’s alright. It’s just like you can hit the little white ball 50 yard at first time, 80 yards at second time, over 100 yards after third time. See yourself getting better and better each time. You take one step forward, it shorten the distance to your goal. There is no short cut way to success. Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.
