Title: Try it! July 15 (AMTC)

(Opening)
I’d like to show you two photos. It’s the first one. I know what you’re thinking---beautiful. Then next one, delicious…I mean the beef. Can you tell the difference between them? It’s my straight teeth! Maybe it’s nothing to you, but it’s significant to me. Because my teeth were all messed up. I used to cover my mouth when laughing. I was so embarrassed. Last year, at 25 years old, I decided to wear the braces like a school girl. Why? The story should start with my mom.

(Body)
My mom thought her daughter could be the best in the world. So she tried to help me succeed by nagging me everyday. One day she said, “You come here! Twenty-five years ago, I gave birth to a fine healthy baby. And she was so beautiful. What’s wrong with you now? Look, your eyes are smaller, your nose is bigger, your teeth are crooked and you’re fat.. Your butt is bigger but your breasts are smaller. You’re taller but your mind is shorter!

I really didn’t listen to my mom, after all “like mother, like daughter.”

However, I still looked at myself in the mirror. Well, my eyes are smaller, but I have broader view. My butt is bigger, but then I can sit better. And my breast…(Cough). What we should really care about is their “Function!” But I knew I was really unhappy with my teeth. Maybe it was time to change and make myself better! People said that wearing braces is terrible. Before I went to see the dentist, it’d better get some advise from my consultants.

First, I went to meet my friend Patrick. He said, “No, you can’t! Wearing braces is terrible. You’ll look weird and ugly. You’ll feel pain and eat nothing! And when will it stop? If you have braces today, you’ll have double eyelid surgery tomorrow, then a nose job, facelift, bone reduction and skin whitening. Finally, you’ll become… “Venus?” I said. “No. Michael Jackson.”

Then I went to my friend Aileen. When heard this news, she was excited and said, “Wow! That’s cool! You’ll be a shinning star, and never feel hungry again “Why?”“Because everything you eat will all get stuck in your braces. Whenever you feel hungry can always have a snack.

At last, I turned to the fortune teller. He gave a mysterious smile, and said “Girl, you look pale. If you want to make yourself better, you need 3C’s. First, you need to “Change.” Then you need “Courage.” The most important thing is… “Cash!” His suggestions were practical. I made up my mind to change, and now I have built up the courage. As for cash…Can anyone help?

Finally I went to see the dentist. When I opened my mouth, he said that I didn’t need to wear braces. I was so surprised that the he refused to get money from my pocket! He asked me to stand up and turned right and left…then smiled! He was in deep thought. It seemed that he realized he still has three children to raise and mortgage to pay. So at last he said, “ok, you do need to wear it.” And these words changed my life. Once the braces were on, I found it was not as bad as people said. I didn’t become Michael Jackson. I ate everything… except corn! And it was easy to start a conversation with anyone because the braces were a good opening.

My fellow Toastmasters, I’m not telling you to have plastic surgery. I’m encouraging you to try things you want! We often stop doing what we want because of others’ different voices. We ignore the little voice inside our heart because others’ are too loud. But if you never try you’ll never know. Do you believe in yourself? Don’t hesitate to try even though people say it’s difficult. Give it a try. You’ll get two answers---“Yes” or “No.” The probability of being successful is at least 50%. But if you never try, it would be zero. So now, my dear Toastmasters, follow your heart! Chase your love! Send your money to my account…!
