The saint of lovers---Valentine’s story
Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
Tonight I am going to tell you a story of a very famous lover in the history, St Valentine. We all know that Valentine’s Day is on February 14th. But before I go further into the story, there is still some information need to be known. So, ladies and gentlemen, shall we take a short quiz now?

Thank you ladies and gentlemen, you guys are just too good at history. I believe it will be easier for me to help you understand the whole story.
Long long time ago….. In the early days of Rome, at that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Nobody liked the emperor very much because he was very cruel. Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men volunteer to join the army. But there were not many men joined in the army because they didn’t want to fight in the war and leave their lovers or wives as well. This made Claudius really mad. So the bad emperor had a crazy idea. He thought if men didn’t get married, they would not mind joining in the army. So the emperor decided not to allow any more marriages. Getting married became illegal at that time!
St Valentine, a priest, was the first one to against the stupid law. He encouraged young people to go for their love and most importantly, he still kept on performing marriage ceremonies for young couples—secretly in the basement. Gradually, he became famous to all the young couples who wanted to get married. As he was getting famous, his life was getting dangerous too. Eventually, he got caught after he had married hundreds of couples. He was thrown to jail and sentenced to death immediately.
Even he was in jail and would be executed anytime, St Valentine was still very optimistic. It might be the power of love because he’s the one who truly believed in love. That’s the reason he took life risk to marry hundreds of young couples. And many young people came to the jail to visit him. They brought flowers and notes to the jail to show their supports to St Valentine. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard, whose name was Emma. Because of her father, she was allowed to see St Valentine in his cell. Sometimes they talked for hours. St Valentine knew that Emma really liked him but he’s the one who couldn’t be love because he’s going to die. So on the day of February 14th, he left a farewell note to express his appreciation to Emma before he was executed. He signed the note, “Love from your Valentine”. Many people believed this is the origin that we send people Valentine’s cards and exchange love messages nowadays.
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a simple story, isn’t it? Love is simple yet memorable. That’s why Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for nearly 2000 years. Do you remember what was the gift you gave or you received from your lover on last Valentine’s Day? Chocolates, candlelight dinners, gold, diamonds and romantic nights in luxury hotels, Valentine’s Day is just over-commercialized nowadays. Let me tell you some Valentine traditions in the old days. In the Middle Ages France, if you like someone, you can draw someone’s name on your sleeves and wear the cloth for a week during Valentine’s Day. And if the special someone likes you, he/she will draw your name on their sleeves too. Then you can draw a heart on the sleeves and people will know that you’re in love with someone. Another tradition was in Wales England. Hearts, keys and keyholes were carved in wooden spoons as gifts given out to your loved ones. It means, “You unlock my heart”. It’s really romantic, isn’t it?
Ladies and gentlemen, I have been keeping telling the old traditions and the story of Valentine to my ex-girlfriends for years. And guess what, after they knew the real meaning of Valentine’s Day, they wouldn’t ask expensive gifts from me. That saved me a lot of money. Of course, you can only use the story to one girl for one time only. After all, Valentine’s Day is all about exchanging of love messages but not exchanging of expensive gifts. Toastmaster!

Imagine that in the hot summer day the torrid sun hangs on the sky. The sun burns your skin. You’re sweating and you feel thirsty. Your skin is sticky and turns into dark. Come on, why don’t you go shopping in the Department store? Enjoy the cool breeze coming from the air conditioner? Wow! So great!
Imagine that in the cold winter day there is an icy wind blowing. The wind chills to your bone. You’re trembling. Your fingers are numb and turn into bloodless. Oh! Why don’t you shop in the department store? Enjoy the warm breath of the air conditioner? Wow! So wonderful! Therefore, no matter in any seasons or in any weather, shopping will be always your best choice for your free time.
(Body)So do I but not only for the weather!
1. At the bra counter
Wow! It’s my first time to visit the bra counter. There were so many different kinds of bra here. When I was taking my pick, the saleswoman came to me!
Saleswoman: May I help you? (with a big smile on her face) I can choose some suitable ones
for you to try on!
Amanda: Ok! Thanks! (the action for trying on the bra…) Um…. Not bad! But they’re a little bit
too expensive. I just have poor salary for each month and I cannot afford it.
Saleswoman: I think they fit your style. A little bit cutie and a little bit sexy! You have very
beautiful shape of chest! Do you see the effect of this bra! It can help you to upgrade from A to A+! No, I mean from C to C+. I’m not good at flattering. But say it truly. You now are as gorgeous as the star 天心!
Amanda: Oh! Come on! Is that true? I think your products are not as expensive as I think and I
really need some new ones. Pack all of them and I’ll pay by credit card.
2. At the clothing counter
Oh! It’s my favorite brand of clothing.
Saleswoman: Hey, long time no see! Come here! I’ll let you try on some of our new-arrivals.
The design of this one-piece dress is more lady style and I found you have
well-proportioned body shape like the super model, 林志玲!
Amanda: Hoo…is that true?
Saleswoman: Of course! And this one is cute style one. Oh! See! It’s also suitable for you
because you’re so slim and have sweet temperament like the popular singer, 楊丞
琳! Believe me I’m telling the truth!
Amanda: Hoooo… Is that true?
Saleswoman: Of course, it’s the truth! Only trim ladies can wear the clothes made by us.
Amanda: Hooooo….. I totally agree with you! You’re so honest! I like this, this, this and this.
Pack them for me and I’ll pay by credit card!

Amanda: Hahahaha…. So now you know another reason I love shopping! It’s shopping is really a healthy exercise because you’ll get lots of complements while you shopping. When you feel happy, your brain will release one kind of happy element, Endorphin, which will keeps your mind in good condition. As a smart girl, please go shopping, shopping and shopping for your health. And for my health I also bought this glory diamond ring for myself.
Amanda: What is this? Oh! It’s my bill. Oops! I hope I can be as rich as Bill Gates!

2006/4/4 Scott's C3 speech

Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, have you ever had the feelings that you want to thank your parents for their loving efforts to raise a family but you don’t know how to show your affection? Have you ever had the feelings that you really need a hug from your intimate friends and your family but you don’t know how to say it? We always expect love will come to our way, but many of us are afraid to show them your love and passion at the beginning. And sometimes when we have a crush on someone, we don’t have the courage to take an action. What’s the problem? The problem is fear. Do you agree to that? We fear failure. We fear the results will get us frustrated and embarrassed. We fear that if we fail to get what we want, we will be lack of confidence when we face it again. From my friends stories I found that everyone loves family but not everyone can show their love to parents easily. And you know what? When I just came back to my hometown, some people said that “hey Scott, somehow I feel that you‘ve got a change, and you look different than you used to be”. So tonight let me share you a story from my family, and you’ll know what the change is and how I can show my love and passion in my life!

After I graduated from school to work, I felt the relationship between me and my family was not that strong and connected than ever because of generation gap. So I often had lots of quarrels with my parents and the quarrel has been going and going until the time when I went to Taipei for work. One day a miracle started to happen that would change my life when I lived with my cousin’s family. I remembered every time when I came back from work, I could see my cousin making milk for his little baby. Wow~ suddenly, I felt the warm and love and it really recalled my family life in my childhood. At that time I thought I was not a good son as I didn’t spend much time with my mother and father. So Since then I place my family above everything especially when I left my home for a long time. Back to two years ago in Taipei, I remembered one day I was working on Father’s day, after work I made a phone call to my dad because it’s a special day for him. Moreover, I haven’t contacted with them for three months already. So I called my dad and let him know I’m doing fine in Taipei. But at the moment he picked up the phone, I began to stammer as my father is a traditional and serious man, I never say something lovely and show him my concern. And I thought he would quarrel with me as I couldn’t come back to see them because of work and long distance. But to my surprise, he said “I hope you can come back more often and your mom will prepare your favorite dishes for you.” At that moment I was really moved by the words he said because he doesn’t show his affection in front of me easily. So here I want to say “Dad, I love you! “
As for my mother, she is devoted all her life to our family and I really appreciated that so I spent five thousands NT dollars to buy her a purse with a sweet letter on Mother’s day. Especially when she cooks, I always try to help her cooking because I love cooking, too. And I think it’s the best way for me to improve the relationship between me and my mom. Until now even though she always nags at me, all I want to say to her is “mom, you works so hard for our family, I love you!” so they are the reason why I want to come back to Kaohsiung and live with my parents again, I think my family changes me to be more mature and understanding man that I have never thought I would be like!

In a word, people are groups. We all need friends and family so we can not live along without love and care our parents give us. Do you know why I share my family story with all of you tonight? Because I think if you don’t show your love to your family naturally, how could you show your love and passion to others? And if we can not love each other, how could this world be full of love and peaceful. So if you come back to home to see your parents next time, please give them a hug and say “Thanks for your love and care, I really appreciate what you’ve done for me, mom and dad, I love you!”

2006/02/21 Keny's C6 Speech

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Every body knows I’m a vet boy, but nobody knows I am also a water boy. Why do I love swimming so much? Because this kind of sport, that I can do it alone, and the sport injury is rare. It is also a whole body exercise and nice aerobic sport. But tonight I didn’t only want to tell you the advantage of this sport. Properly I would like share with you my personal story when I want to be a water boy.

It was a hot summer vacation in 1995. I was still a vet intern in animal teaching hospital of National Pingtung University. I thought I’d be very busy but still bored in this summer vacation. I didn’t want this vacation end up like last one. Maybe God heard my prayer, my then classmate who was also my buddy gave me a big surprise next day. He signed up a lifeguard training for me. Luckily, we both were admitted. It was simply too good to be true. And just when I was fantasizing the wonderful beaches or swimming pools and the hot bikini girls in this vacation, my buddy told me not to expect too much from it yet. Although we were admitted, we had to pass the entrance examination before we could join the training course. This is a big problem for us. According to the information of the lifeguard training society, the acceptance rate was only 50 percent. We didn’t know how to prepare and we only had one month to go. For the sake of the colorful and unforgettable summer vacation, we’re ready to risk everything. Finally we requested the senior who was already a lifeguard coach. We were so lucky, because he offered to help us and he designed a basic and simple training course for us. But not everything was smooth as silk. I had to iron out some obstacles. Firstly my boss gave me so much work to do that I always worked over time. And secondly, I had some home teaching job in my free time. Thirdly, I had to get up early to join the morning swimming training. I knew my body was so tired progressively and my mind was not really clear day by day. Three weeks later, something happened. I still remember it is a nice early morning. It’s the same fresh air and birds singing. I was on my way to the swimming pool by motorcycle. I still felt so tired because my sleeping time was not enough. Suddenly someone turned off the light in my mind. I couldn’t see anything at the same time. Then I felt the motorcycle run over the roadblock. It was flying in the air and it collided with a tree. Ya. What about me? I fell down on the ground and my body was upside down. And I fainted soon. When I woke up I just knew that my body had multiple abrasions. The doctor told me that I had to be in hospital for two days.

Ok, ladies and gentlemen. Before God wants to assign you a mission, he will test you. Right? Do you want to know what happened at the end of this story? I got batter quickly in the last week and all of us passed the entrance examination. But it is just only a beginning. I knew the following training course would be harder than ever. But we were determined to take on the challenges. No matter what we wouldn’t give up. Everybody, Tonight God wants to give our club member another great task. So, are you ready? YES! Thank you.
